6th Grade Renaissance Faire

Step into the past through the eyes of our sixth graders at our annual Renaissance Faire, where history comes to life as students transform months of research, creativity, and curiosity into an immersive celebration of innovation and discovery. This culminating experience of our sixth-grade social studies curriculum invites students to explore how the breakthroughs of the Renaissance continue to shape the world we live in today.

7th Grade Genetic Research Symposium

The Seventh-Grade Genetic Research Symposium is a signature event in our Middle School science curriculum. Over several weeks, students work in pairs to research a specific genetic disorder, exploring its causes, symptoms, inheritance patterns, treatments, and overall impact. This project develops critical scientific research skills while fostering collaboration, problem-solving, and attention to detail.

At the symposium, students present their findings through carefully crafted scientific posters, educating peers, family, and faculty about their chosen topic. The event provides students with the opportunity to practice public speaking, explain complex concepts clearly, and celebrate the depth of their learning in genetics. It’s a meaningful way for the seventh-grade community to engage with science, curiosity, and one another.

Shabbatonim

Every high school class shares a Shabbaton each year. These annual, off-site weekends allow each grade to welcome Shabbat together through song, learning, tefilah, shared meals, and the kind of unhurried time that strengthens friendships. For many, it becomes a highlight of the year: a chance to slow down, reset, and experience Jewish life with intention.

Beyond the spiritual and cultural experiences, Shabbatonim deepen the connections that define our high school community. Students bond across shared conversations and late-night laughter, and faculty join in a different role—mentors, companions, and guides outside the classroom. Whether welcoming Shabbat as a community, exploring big ideas together, or simply enjoying unstructured time, the Shabbaton helps students build the trust, confidence, and sense of belonging that anchor their Leffell School experience.

ISR (Independent Science Research)

Independent Science Research (ISR) program offers our high school students a chance to pursue scientific research of their choosing at a college graduate level for three-and-a-half years. Beginning in ninth grade and continuing through the first semester of senior year, ISR is a rigorous program designed for a select number of students who are interested in conducting original science research in an academic or medical laboratory under the guidance of a professional mentor. Areas of study include the biological, behavioral, environmental, or physical sciences; astronomy, engineering, computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, or mathematics.

As students advance through the program, they learn to write scientific research papers and abstracts with the ultimate goal of presenting their research at a regional science and engineering competition, such as the Westchester and Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) and/or the Regeneron Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF). Students will also have the option to compete nationally in the Regeneron Science Talent Search during their senior year.

Transportation

Daily student transportation to and from our campuses is generally provided by the public school district in which the family resides. To verify that you are eligible for this service, contact your local school district. Most districts’ transportation application deadline for free district busing is April 1. Please make sure to contact your district’s transportation department if you have not received a district busing application for your child/ren.

For most of those communities where public transportation is not provided, The Leffell School has arranged for private van and bus service, which is available at a fee. The communities that are currently serviced by private busing include Connecticut, New Rochelle (grades 6-12), Riverdale, Rockland, New York City, New Jersey, and White Plains (grades 6-12).
