Course Level: regular
Core or Elective: elective
Department: Agora
Grades: 9, 10, 11, and 12
This Advanced Agora Seminars seminar course investigates the deep historical and ethical roots of Western governance, treating the U.S. Constitution not as a static document, but as the culmination of a millennia-long dialogue regarding justice and power. The course begins by analyzing the transition from ancient legal codes and covenantal structures to the modern social contract. Students will explore the philosophical evolution of “The State,” examining how early definitions of leadership, communal obligation, and divine or natural law prefigured contemporary ideas of limited government. By deconstructing the architectural logic of the separation of powers, the course challenges students to identify the persistent moral imperatives that underpin the American founding.
