Student Reflections on Mechina Options Week
Jacob Quint
Before arriving at the Mechina on Sunday, I felt a wave of apprehension. I questioned whether my Hebrew would be strong enough, how demanding the programming might be, and whether I would feel judged
It didn’t take long for those fears to fade. After participating in lessons, sports, and games with the Mechina students, I gradually began to feel part of their community. This week was not only an opportunity to put my Hebrew-speaking skills to the test – and it certainly did that – but also a powerful lesson in the true meaning of community. From living in dorms alongside local Mechina members to competing in an intense game of Capture the Flag, I felt a deep sense of unity and belonging. These shared experiences prompted me to reflect on what it might mean to live on a college campus – learning, eating, and growing alongside people who initially begin as strangers. Additionally, after spending time at the Mechina, I formed stronger bonds with peers in my grade with whom I had not previously imagined becoming close. One particularly meaningful moment was the student-facilitated bonfire on Monday night. It gave us the chance to decompress and share an intimate, reflective space together. Through activities such as a compliment circle, a game of Mafia, and roasting marshmallows, we immersed ourselves in one another’s company. The bonfire allowed us to pause and reflect on our time at the Mechina, sharing favorite memories and appreciating the connections we had formed. Another memorable experience was volunteering at a farm alongside several Mechina members. Whether we were shoveling hay, feeding birds, painting cans, or visiting with the children, we worked side by side with a shared sense of purpose. This experience beautifully exemplified the Mechina’s deep commitment to community and service. Beyond the hands-on work, we also attended a range of fascinating classes, with topics spanning from Machiavelli to the integration of Arabs in modern Israeli cities. These lessons challenged both our critical thinking and our Hebrew comprehension, as they were conducted entirely in Hebrew. Engaging with complex ideas in another language pushed me outside of my comfort zone in the most rewarding way. We also participated in rigorous physical training sessions that are built into the Mechina program to prepare students for their army service. These demanding workouts highlighted the strength, discipline, and resilience of the Mechina students. Being able to take part in that aspect of their routine was both humbling and inspiring. Just after midnight on my birthday, dozens of Mechina students poured into the living room of our dorm, filling it with singing, clapping, and dancing. In a matter of moments, I experienced the true meaning of acceptance and belonging. Only three days earlier, we had been strangers; now I was being lifted onto a chair and celebrated like family. It was a birthday I will never forget and a powerful testament to the warmth of the Mechina community. It was the perfect ending to a week that began with uncertainty and concluded with connection, growth, and gratitude. I am leaving my time at the Mechina with a renewed understanding of community, stronger relationships, greater self-awareness, and a broadened appreciation for people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I am deeply grateful that I chose to take part in such a meaningful and transformative experience.
