Matt Werner (MS ’08)
Matthew Werner graduated from Solomon Schechter Middle School in 2008. Since then he earned a BA from George Washington University and developed into a sales and operations professional working at the restaurant holding company of Retail Worx, which operates restaurants in Manhattan, and recently began a new role with Israeli-based basketball startup RSPCT Basketball Technologies as head of operations and sales for high school and collegiate basketball.
In his role with RSPCT Basketball Technologies, a company that uses high precision shot tracking to improve players shooting and team decisions, Matt uses the Hebrew he learned from his teachers at Schechter Westchester. Matt admits that he communicates with his colleagues and Israel based clients in Hebrew with only the occasional glance at a Hebrew-English Dictionary.
RSPCT Basketball Technologies works with NBA teams, division one collegiate teams and athletes, and even elite high schools including Schechter Westchester. Matt credits middle school principal Amy Holtzer and Dr. Michelle Jasper Brody for helping him to focus, set goals, and seek continued improvement – lessons that he acknowledges have helped him thrive professionally and personally.
Matt is no stranger to basketball or Schechter Westchester as he is also coach of the Schechter Westchester girls’ varsity basketball team. This past year, he was unanimously named Coach of the Year by his peers for leading the girls to their first ever Section C Semi-Final berth at the County Center. Matt credits his former PE teacher and current supervisor Coach Scott D'Ottavio, who nurtured Matt's love of sports and competition during his nine years as a Schechter student. Matt is delighted that he gets to give back to the community that gave him so much and feels lucky to be greeted every day that he arrives for practice by the familiar face that greeted him when he was a student, the irreplaceable Greg Mines.
